Why doesn't translation work in my browser?

Translation needs a language model, and the only one a web page can use without a server is the translator Chrome ships built in (Chrome 138+ on desktop). Where that isn't available, this tool can't run — and we won't quietly send your text to a translation API instead.

Is my text sent to Google when it does work?

No. Chrome's Translator API runs the model on your own machine; the language pack downloads once and then works offline.

Which languages are supported?

21 language options are offered, and availability for each pair is checked against your browser before you translate.
