What is percent-encoding?

Percent-encoding (URL encoding) replaces characters not allowed in URLs with a percent sign followed by two hexadecimal digits. A space becomes %20, an ampersand becomes %26 and so on.

When should I use encodeURI vs encodeURIComponent?

Use encodeURI to encode a complete URL — it preserves :, /, ?, = and &. Use encodeURIComponent to encode a single query parameter value — it encodes those characters too, preventing them from being interpreted as URL structure.
