What is the Caesar cipher?

The Caesar cipher is one of the oldest substitution ciphers. Each letter is shifted by a fixed number of positions in the alphabet. For example, with a shift of 3: A becomes D, B becomes E, Z becomes C. It was used by Julius Caesar for private correspondence.

Is the Caesar cipher secure?

No. With only 25 possible key values the Caesar cipher can be broken by brute force in under a second. It is useful for educational demonstrations and simple puzzles only — never for real security.

ROT13 is a Caesar cipher with a shift of 13. Since the English alphabet has 26 letters, applying ROT13 twice returns the original text. It is widely used on forums and social media to hide spoilers and puzzle solutions.
